Background
Research + Design are a new architectural design practice established in 2006 by
The ethos of the practice is to create a small hub of social and architectural activity in Plymouth with an open door policy where friends, clients and the local creative community are encouraged to stop by, say hello, and discuss ideas and projects.
Research + Design consist of like minded individuals from a broad range of disciplines including architecture, architectural technology, design, fabrication, planning, the arts and the creative industries:
The way we design
We believe what sets Research + Design apart from other design professionals is the way we design. Early on, we consider appropriate consulting teams that are tailored to the requirements of each project. Designs are largely determined by ongoing client, consultant and fabricator dialogues and not by ‘off the shelf’ solutions and images that are so prevalent in current architectural style and fashion. We have a growing reputation for our abilities to work with specialized fabricators, craftspeople and respected artists in the region.
We bring this perspective to every commission, and as such endeavour to generate insight for particular clients in particular circumstances in particular places. We excel with difficult and demanding sites and complex building briefs. Because of the way we design, and the insights generated, the design of a project evolves naturally and uniquely and the image of the project (the way it looks) comes last. This means that Clients benefit from a measured, enjoyable and rewarding experience that results in creating design and architecture that can be long lasting, places that age well, and projects that have a sense of belonging in their surroundings.
Our impact on the environment
Research + Design strive to complete responsible, socially and environmentally aware designs that produce buildings and constructions that are meant to last and are therefore sustainable. We have a strong interest in green refurbishment with the belief that green elements although important must be secondary to the overall experience and enjoyment of living and working in spaces that enhance our connection to the local landscape and surroundings. We are constantly researching and specifying the most effective methods and materials for constructing, heating and cooling our designs and determining a balance between these considerations and the considerations of the project and of the Client.
Building our designs
We believe that good architecture and design should be accessible to anyone regardless of budget. Completed designs have to be both buildable and affordable. Integral to the way that we design is ‘buildability’, Projects going into construction are all fully specified and include a full Schedule of Work. We have working relationships with local builders and craftsmen with a professional commitment to their craft.
What we do
We provide research and design for most project types and sizes including new buildings, contemporary conversions, alterations of period properties, design appraisals and feasibility studies for developers and site and architectural research in the southwest. We hope to further develop our ideas, our concepts and our knowledge about research and design and to apply our experience and what we have learned to larger scale projects and developments in the future.
